What Are Tags and What Is Their Importance in SEO?

Everyone with a website wants more visibility, more traffic, and definitely more revenue. And in order to accomplish that, you need your website to have a strong SEO campaign.

SEO- or Search Engine Optimization- is a set of rules that increase website traffic and visibility with the help of organic search results. While there are several steps you can take to make your website more visible in an online search- from developing backlinks to enhancing your social media presence-, the importance of on-page SEO cannot be denied. And while talking about on-page SEO, can tags be far behind?

You must have knowledge about the different types of tags- title tags, header tags, blog post tags, and Meta tags. They seem small, but they are powerful enough to increase your website traffic.

There used to be far more tags in the past, but with time, most tags have lost their importance and got diminished. Let’s take a look at the tags that still exist and have an impact on your blog or website’s ranking and traffic.

Title Tags: A good title tag tells the user what the content on a page is all about even before they click on the link. Keyword-stuffed title tags used to be an important element in boosting website traffic, but their significance has gone down in the last few years.

Since Google’s focus on semantic search, the importance of title tags has dwindled. Even though they still determine how a website ranks in search results, it matters a lot less now.

Header Tags: This kind of tags is the HTML markup used to separate headings and subheadings from other types of text on a page. The header tags hierarchy ranges from h1 to h6, where h1 is the most important and h6 the least.

Compared to a few years ago, header tags especially h1 tags have increased in importance. On-site SEO has been demonstrated to be largely affected by the use of header tags. Websites trying to boost rankings or visibility make use of header tags to improve SEO. So even if other tags dwindle in importance, header tags are here to stay.

Post Tags: Blogging platforms like WordPress have the option of inserting contextual tags to organize posts better and make them easier to find in a search result. They are basically meant to help visitors find their way around a website by grouping posts of a same or similar topic together.

Even though post tags do not necessarily influence traffic or rankings, they improve user experience and help lower bounce rates. All these factors make visitors stay on a site for longer, something Google takes into account when ranking sites.

While some tags have lost their importance as far as rankings and traffic is concerned, certain tags still continue to rule. It must be remembered that tags alone cannot get more traffic to a website. You need first to have valuable content that people want, and then optimize it with a relevant SEO strategy to boost rankings.
